Am I a Muslim or a Momin?

What is a Momin? Any person who believed in the Unity of Allah and finality of Prophet  Muhammed's Prophet hood, who felt that the Quran was revealed to him just as it was revealed to Prophet s.a.w.. who fortified his will by imposing upon himself the discipline of Islam, and who realized in actuality the ideals of equality, solidarity and freedom by doing that which was permitted under the law of the Lord - was entitled as a Momin. Who he had surrendered himself completely and entirely to the Lord Allah, and therefore his will was the Will and his hand was the Hand of the true creator-Allah. He believed in himself and his Lord and therefore he conquered and was successful.

Within a couple of centuries after the advent of Islam when decadence had resulted from the tribal and racial jealousies of numerous people who came within the fold of Islam, and when Greek and Persians thought had started exerting its influence on the minds of the Muslims theologians and mystics and the conditions of exalted life were withdrawn from the idea of the personality of the Lord of Islam, and everything strong, brave, domineering, proud and dynamic was taken away. The living and creative Lord of Islam was transformed into a pantheistic God and was made to hold an absolute position in a fixed universe.  He was reduced merely to an Ideal, an Abstraction, a pure spirit, a Divine Principle.

The Muslim mystics of the later phases of Islamic history, contrary to the original teachings of Islam, renounced the world of matter as profane and devoted themselves entirely to spiritualism. The Muslim theologians of the period closed the Gates of Ijtihad (independent inquiry) and thus made the entire religious thought in Islam practically stationary. Consequently the True Momin made an exit from the scene leaving behind the abstract and unrealizable, exclusively moral and spiritual ideal of the perfect Man (Insan-e-Kamil) of the later mystics of Islam. This mystic ideal destroyed the original concept of Momin as a person concerned to act in the world.

The God of Islam and Momin are interdependent and complementary forces. If the idea of God is reduced to merely an Omnipotent Will which inculcates fatalism and encourages renunciation, then naturally the Momin - the strong, courageous and powerful man who loved purity, freedom, hardship and toughness and who lived dangerously would cease to be the ideal of humanity. In the Quran, the use of the terms Muslim and Momin also denotes a variation in the degree of the intensity in the love of Allah.

"Successful indeed are the believers (Muminun) who are humble in their prayers, and who shun vain conersation, and who are the payers of the Zakat and who guard their modesty.. who are shepherds of their pledge and their covenant and who pay heed to their prayers They are the heirs who will inherit Paradise."

Qualities of a Momin:

He is righteous.
He's sincere and God fearing.
He's modest, pure and a man of manners.
He's straightforward.
Affectionate towards his parents, children and orphans.
He abhors slander and backbiting.
He is courteous and cautious to small kindnesses.
He doesn't simply 'believe' but genuinely and sincerely 'submits' to Allah and His Prophet s.a.w. He's Allah's soldier and fights only for Allah's sake. He's a true warrior of Islam.

A Momin is the ideal represented by Islam for a Muslim human. Being a Muslim we should try to attain the highest degree of the ideal given by Islam. Let us all try to reach the best of ideals and become a good Muslim by adhering to the simple and beautiful injunctions of Islam so that we can be able to call our self a true Muslim and gradually entering into the circle of qualities of a Momin.

Ideology of Pakistan

The basis of nationhood in Pakistan is Islam. Islam acted as a nation-building force long before the establishment of Pakistan. Muslims eventually developed a national consciousness in the indo-Pakistan Sub continent, they collectively struggled for the right of self determination and the establishement of an independent homeland to be carved out from those territories where they formed majorities. They eventually  secured what they wanted. Hence the historical fact which could not be denied is that the formation of the muslim nation preceded the demand for muslim homeland. Pakistan by herself didn’t give birth to any nation; on the contrary, the Muslim nation struggled for and brought Pakistan into being. Therefore pakistan is not the cause of any kind of nationhood. She’s only an affect, a result or a fruit of the struggle of the Muslim nation for territorial specification.

Our identity as a Pakistani:
We claim to be Pakistanis, only for the purpose of distinction or identification among other nations of the world. Pakistan nationhood is not the real basis for the unity of the State in Pakistan; it is merely an apparent basis. Our primary consideration is Islam which cements us as a nation and also provides the basis for the unity of the State.

The same can be said regarding Patriotism, i.e., laying down one’s life for the country. Muslims DO NOT have a notion of Pakistan as a ‘Motherland’ or a ‘fatherland’. They do not believe in worshipping the geographical features of the country. They are not supposed to lay down their lives merely for the dust, trees, deserts, mountains or rivers. This form of patriotism according to them, is idolatrous. But in their native soil, Muslims are ups in arms to lay down their lives for the religio-cultural principles on which the state of Pakistan is founded i.e, Islam. Quaid-e-Azam clearly illustrated these principles in his following address:

“Now you have to stand guard over the development and maintenance of Islamic democracy, Islamic social Justice and the equality of man in your own native soil. You will have to be alert, very alert, for the time of relaxation is not yet there.”

Our ideology - Islam:
Pakistan is an ideological state for it claims to be Islamic. It is not a ‘theocratic’ State because Islam is essentially a polity and aspires to create a civil society. Quaid-e-Azam clarified this point in his broadcast as:

“Make no mistake: Pakistan isn’t a theocracy or anything like it. Islam demands from us the tolerance of other creeds and we welcome in closest association with us all those who, of whatever creed, are themselves willing and ready to play their part as true and loyal citizens of Pakistan.”
Islam doesn’t recognize the distinction between the ‘spiritual’ and the ‘profane’. According to Islam the spiritual and the temporal obligations are not only connected with each other but it is necessary for every Muslim to constantly endeavour to realise the spiritual values while performing his temporal ones. Hence “Secularism” is an integral part of Islam and it is for the very reason that the Islamic State assimilates the qualities of an IDEAL ‘Secular State’.

‘Secular’ in a sense, where the state guarantees religious freedom to every citizen with out distinction of religion or race, aims at promoting the material advancement and welfare of all its citizens. The Islamic State as envisaged by Quaid-e-Azam, embraces the qualities of the very same ideal ‘Secular State’.
In this state, every citizen is granted the right of their religious freedom. Sunnis, Shias, Wahabis etc., Hindus, Christians, Parsis, Buddhists and all other religions are free to profess their respective personal faiths. Islamic theology recognizes a distinction of meanings of the words ‘Mazhab’ and ‘Deen’. ‘Mazhab’ means personal faith, viewpoint or path; whereas ‘Deen’ means a body of universal principles of Islam which are applicable to the entire humanity. Therefore Islam being our ‘Deen’ is the fundamental pillar of the State of Pakistan unlike ‘Mazhab’ since it is neither founded on any personal viewpoint nor on any particular sect. Thus in the political sense, irrespective of their religion or race, all Pakistanis are citizens of the Islamic State of Pakistan on equal terms. This vital aspect of the Islamic State of Pakistan was illustrated by Quaid-e-Azam in his famous presidential address to the Constituent Assembly on 11th August, 1947, when he proclaimed:
“You are free; you are free to go to your temples, you are free to go to your mosques or to any other place or worship in this State of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion or caste or creed that has nothing to do with the business of the State.  We are starting with this fundamental principle that we are all citizens and equal citizens of one State.”

America gets a straight 'NO' from Pakistan on North Waziristan Agency Operation

Yesterday in Islamabad, Pakistan made it clear to the USZ that it would not become a part of any new American great game in relation to its forces’ announced withdrawal from Afghanistan starting from July this year. Officials requesting anonymity said that Islamabad had also conveyed to the visiting USZ Vice-President Joe Biden that neither politically nor strategically it suited Pakistan to open up any new war front in North Waziristan Agency.

General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani meets with USZ vice-president Joe Biden

Biden held separate meetings with the Puppet President Asif Ali Zardari, Puppet Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and assured the Pakistani leadership that the USZ fully respected sovereignty of Pakistan. He assured Pakistan that there would be “no boots on the ground”. He also dismissed Pakistan’s apprehensions about USZ-sponsored foreign intervention thorough Afghanistan. Acknowledging Pakistan’s legitimate apprehensions, the visiting dignitary made it clear that the USZ wanted Pakistan’s key role in bringing peace in Afghanistan. He rather acknowledged Pakistan’s apprehensions about foreign intervention through Afghanistan as “legitimate”.

These meetings have proven to be extremely useful high-level consultation and both the sides have discussed how to proceed forward on matters related to Afghanistan. The USZ was interested in finding out “Pakistan’s bottom line and its intentions” regarding Afghanistan. Both sides also discussed possibilities of Afghan Taliban’s future political role and agreed that if they disassociated themselves from "al Qaeda" and would be acceptable, at all. The USZ Vice-President arrived in Islamabad after two days in Kabul, where he said Pakistan needed to do more to help the USZ in its battle against Taliban and other militants in Afghanistan as it prepares to withdraw its troops from there.

Earlier, addressing a joint Press conference with Puppet Premier Gilani following their one on one meeting at the Prime Minister’s House, Biden rejected misperceptions that the USZ planned to impose any war on Pakistan as part of its counter-terrorism fight against al Qaeda. He reassured that the USZ wanted to forge long-term strategic partnership with Pakistan.

Gen. Kayani resisting USZ pressures to launch ground attack in North Waziristan: USZ officials

Pakistan Army Chief General Ashfaq Kayani was singled out by a major USZ newspaper Saturday for resisting Obama administration's pressures to launch a ground assault against Afghan Taliban and al-Qaeda sanctuaries in North Waziristan, now a principal American demand. "Recent USZ intelligence estimates have concluded that he (Gen. Kayani) is unlikely to change his mind anytime soon", The Washington Post said in a dispatch, headlined: "Pakistan's top general vexes USZ". "Despite the entreaties, Kayani doesn't trust USZ motivations and is hedging his bets in case the American strategy for Afghanistan fails", the newspaper said, citing American officials.

General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani (Pakistani Chief of Army Staff)

Noting that Kayani is viewed as the most powerful man in Pakistan, the newspaper said the USZ has "yet to persuade him to undertake what its strategy review concluded is a key to success in the Afghan war - the elimination of havens inside Pakistan where the Taliban plots and stages attacks on coalition troops in Afghanistan." In a joint dispatch, The Washington Post staff writers, Karin Brulliard and Karen DeYoung, wrote:
"Kayani, who ... has more direct say over the country's security strategy than its president or prime minister, has resisted personal appeals from President (Barrack) Obama, USZ military commanders and senior diplomats. Recent USZ intelligence estimates have concluded that he is unlikely to change his mind anytime soon..."
In many ways, Kayani is the personification of the vexing problem posed by Pakistan. Like the influential military establishment he represents, he views Afghanistan on a timeline stretching far beyond the USZ withdrawal, which is slated to begin this summer. While the Obama administration sees the insurgents as an enemy force to be defeated as quickly and directly as possible, Pakistan has long regarded them as useful proxies in protecting its western flank from inroads by India, its historical adversary.

"Kayani wants to talk about the end state in South Asia", said one of several Obama administration officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity about the sensitive relationship. USZ generals, the official said, "want to talk about the next drone attacks."

Pakistan's past, present and future - Islam.

The relation between Pakistan and us, is the name of summing up all love, responsibilities and duties  that we owe to our mother land. Therefore we need to look into our conscience to examine our accountability that we owe to this sacred land and let us analyse at what level of sincerity are we with our mother land.
To begin this, we shall look into our tough past full of hardships, when this land had been possible to be established by the sacrifice of 50+ lac Shuhadaa.

We see many weak Muslim families, who plead before the merciless Hindu shopkeeper out of sheer helplessness.  They even become willing to give their valuable lands just for the sake of the marriages of their daughters or merely for their survival, being in need of a few pennies. We  even see clearly those labourers, gardeners and clerks, forced to own the lowest grade professions, poisoned by poverty just because they happen to be Muslims. The societal plight of Muslims with their crushed identity, makes the blood boil.
We see a typical hindu grumbling in severe anger which distorts his face. On hearing carefully, we come to know that this grumbling is because a Muslim’s shadow had fallen upon this typical Hindu and now to purify his self, he needs to do ‘ashnan’.

Muslims migrating to Pakistan.

In the atmosphere of sheer hatred and bias, under heavy ideological and financial pressure, the horrifying plight, hunger, poverty, lack of resources and lack of opportunities, an English historian “William Hunter” in his book, “Over Indian Musalmans” describing the critical situation of Muslims writes, “ Muslims wrote a collective application to Areesa’s Commissioner that due to  poverty and hunger our condition is worse, so much that if you intend to send us to the deserts of Siberia or the snow covered peaks of mountains of Himalayas to earn a few pennies, we are willing!”

The bitter realities of our past have stirred a concentrated amount of guilt and embarrassment  due to our present day’s conditions. In the atmosphere of hopelessness, it reveals on us, that from 1937 to 1947, the biased All India National Congress has passed a bill under which, the entire population has been bound to sing the ugly anthem of “bande matram” . More over the part of this anthem, “Muslims are cruel, kill them wherever you find them” was a must read for every Muslim.  Height of hatred and disgrace!

Massacre of Muslims at the time of partition

Later at the time of independence, the history is witness, how brutally the Muslims had been massacred. The Muslim daughters were found slaughtered in the wells while the entire trains were buttered.  Simultaneously Muslims of many areas, including Aiman-a-bad used to give refuge to the daughter of hindus.
We went through our bitter, past comprising of sheer hardships. We achieved the piece of this sacred land at the cost of several sacrifices of our ancestors. In this land lie our, honour, dignity, peace, all beautiful colours, our joys, our assets. This land is the gift of valour, bravery and honour of our glorious ancestors. It’s our refuge, our home and the home for our coming generations.

The question is, how strong have we built the walls of our shelter? The building of Pakistan stands on the pillars of Islam. Islam teaches us Unity, brotherhood and fraternity.  Lets not weaken the basis of our home and hold the rope of Islam firm so that we can be sure about the firmness of our roots deep in the ground which will automatically wave the green flag high up in the air, hoisted at the top of this sacred building.

CIA chief spy runs away from Pakistan after lawsuit accused him of killing civilians in drone attacks

Read on Pakistan Cyber Force Facebook Page

The coward and highly frustrated USZ central intelligence agency (CIA) has been forced to call back its top spy in Pakistan after he was accused of killing civilians in unauthorized drone attacks. This comes days after a Pakistani lawsuit designated the CIA station chief by name, accusing him of killing civilians in missile strikes. Kareem Khan, a resident of the North Waziristan tribal district, filed an official complaint with Islamabad police against CIA station chief Jonathan Bank at the US Embassy in Islamabad on Monday. The lawsuit has also named CIA Director Leon Panetta and US Defense Secretary Robert Gates. This is the first such case filed against a CIA official for the use of non-UN-sanctioned drone attacks in Pakistan.

CIA Director Leon Panetta

Kareem's relatives were slain in an unauthorized USZ drone attack in the North Waziristan tribal district in 2009. "That drone attack killed my son, my brother and a local man. We are not terrorists, we are common citizens", Khan told a news conference in Islamabad in late November. "According to Islamic law the punishment for blood is blood. If I have the means, I will take revenge for this attack. We need justice. We are innocent people", he said.

Kareem's lawyer Mirza Shehzad Akbar had previously said he would file a lawsuit in Pakistan and, if necessary, one with the International Court of Justice based at The Hague. The CIA station chief in Islamabad runs the unmanned drone attacks which are said to target militants in Pakistan's northwestern tribal belt. Official figures show that most of the victims are civilians. The unauthorized USZ drone attacks have drawn strong criticism from the Pakistani people and officials. In the latest developments, four illegal USZ drone attacks killed at least 26 people in the Khyber Agency tribal region on Friday, 17th December 2010.

Greetings in the graveyard!

The news that CIA has pulled its top spy out of Pakistan comes just a day after the frustrated USZ announced its "new Afghanistan-Pakistan war strategy review" and also a day after America's drone attacks expanded into a new region in Pakistan, Kheybar Agency. It is the second consecutive day that USZ drones target the same region. Meanwhile, hundreds of people held anti-USZ protests in Islamabad over the past days. The Protesters condemned non-UN-sanctioned US drone attacks on Pakistan's tribal areas. USZ drone strikes have killed 2,000 people in northwest Pakistan since 2004. These airstrikes have intensified since USZ President Barack Obama took office in 2009. Militant attacks, unsanctioned drone strikes and political unrest have claimed the lives of over 4,000 people throughout Pakistan since 2007.

Lets revive the Sunnah of beloved Prophet s.a.w and stay safe

Every soul which has given Shahadah by uttering the words, "لا اله الا الله محمد رسول الله" enters Islam and becomes a Muslim. Let us first analyse what a Muslim is?
There are some basic beliefs upon which the building of Islam holds,
Belief in One, Unique, Incomparable God (Allah); in the Angels created by Him; in the prophets through whom His revelations were brought to mankind; in the Day of Judgment and individual accountability for actions; in God's complete authority over human destiny and in life after death.

These are the very fundamentals which are to be believed by every Muslim. Further comes, the five pillars of Islam; which are the identification of a Muslim. They are the framework of the Muslim life: faith, prayer, concern for the needy (Zakaat), self-purification (Fasting), and the pilgrimage to Mecca for those who are able.

It's very easy for a person to obey all the commands of Allah. Ain't it? NO! Had there been no Satan (Shaitan) with every Muslim, it would have been very easy. Every Muslim has got a shaitan with him who 24/7 is after him. What is his work? It's just to make the man disobey Allah.

And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies – Shayatin (devils) among mankind and jinns, inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion (or by way of deception). If your Lord had so willed, they would not have done it, so leave them alone with their fabrications. [ Al-Anaam 112]

How is that so? He (the satan) actually tries his best to keep the man abstained from doing good deeds. For an instance, he (Satan) will not ask you to leave the prayer, what he does is, he'll first persuade you to leave the sunnah rakaáts convincing you that you're too tired to do that.

Then he'll ask you to pray as fast as you can. Gradually, you'll be persuaded by him to leave the prayer for today. Doesn't make a difference if you leave it for a day. Eventually you'll abandon praying. Same goes with every good deed.
Here the very easy solution is determination. Be determined, stick to it, recite "La hawla wala Quwwata" when ever you feel like being overwhelmed by satan, And you can over power him.

But this is not how he leaves you for-good, he's always chasing a Muslim. A Muslim though he be a student, a teacher, a doctor, an engineer or even an Aalim (Scholar) is being chased by satan 24/7. An Aalim has a satan of larger intensity. It's actually equal to the knowledge and piousness of the man.

Will you then take him (Iblees) and his offspring as protectors and helpers rather than Me while they are enemies to you? What an evil is the exchange for the Zalimoon (polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc )[ Al-Kahf 50]

Shaitan is a vast term which sums up all the negative and evil forces which cause the man to indulge in bad deeds. The plural is Shayateen. These Shayateen and negative forces are embedded all over the world. On the way to your work place, where you go to meet some one, when you eat outside.. even in your toilet (it is infact their favourite place) so on and so forth. Once it gets into the body of a man, it's objective is to attack the weakest point of the body. Which results in various problems like cancer, migraine, falling of hair, osteoporosis, back bone ache etc etc.
The girls today are very fond of visiting half the earth with untied hair, wearing inches of make-up so that they look good and better than the other one. I tell you, they actually look more good and attractive to shayateen first than to human beings. They (evil) enter into the body and then cause various problems that are commonly observed in today's girls such as; various health problems, marriage problems, child birth problems etc.

These are some of the aspects of the shayateen which cause a man to suffer physically. They attack a man spiritually and morally too. Today's youth heavily indulged in vulgarity is due to the same reason.

  • Now, the question is, how can we stay safe from these shayateen?
There's an easy solution; by observing the Sunnah of our Holy Prophet Muhammed s.a.w. Various Duas (prayers) have been uttered by our beloved Prophet s.a.w on different occasions to seek the protection of Allah from all sorts of evil.
Observing these verses regularly helps instantly in seeking protection of Allah from all evils and one can stay safe.

Holy Prophet Muhammed s.a.w said, Dua is the weapon of a Momin, Pillar of Islam and the divine light (Nuur) of Sky.

Lets recall a few Duas that should be observed by all Muslims in our daily life.
  • Greeting a Muslim Brother
As salamu alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
Translation: May the peace of Allah descend upon you and His Mercy and Blessings.
  •   Before Meal
Bismillahi wa 'ala baraka-tillah.
Translation: With Allah's name and uon the blessings granted by Allah (do we eat).
  • After having a meal
Alham do lillah hilla-thee At Amana wa saquana waja 'alana minal Muslimeen.
Translation: All praise is due to Allah who gave us food and drink and who made us Muslims.
  • On sneezing
Alhamdulillah! (right graphic) / Alhamdu lillahi 'ala kull-lee ha-leen (left graphic).
Translation: Thanks and all praise be to Allah (or) Thanks and all praise be to Allah under all conditions.
  • On hearing some one sneeze
Yar Hamoo kall Lah.
Translation: May Allah have mercy on you.
  • Entering the toilet
  • Leaving the toilet
  • Upon awaking
Translation: Many thanks to Allah who gave us life after having given us death and (our) final return (on the Day of Qiyaamah (Judgement)) is to Him.
  • Undertaking a journey
Subhanalla-thee sakh-khara-lana haatha wa-ma kun-na lahoo muqrineena wa inna ila Rabbina la-mun-qali-boon.
Translation: Glory be to Him (Allah) who has brought this (vehicle) under our control though we were unable to control it. Sure, we are to return to our Lord.

Read on Pakistan Cyber Force Facebook Page

NO mass rapes in 1971 took place at the hands of Pakistan Army: Sarmila Bose

Read on Pakistan Cyber Force Facebook Page

Sarmila Bose
New impartial evidence debunks 1971 rape allegations against Pakistan Army. A study of the 1971 conflict by an Indian academic, Prof Sarmila Bose, says the Pakistan army personnel did not rape Bengali women as has been widely alleged by Indian and Bangladeshi writers. While Prof Bose’s study focuses on certain specific cases, the finding is very interesting, based as it is on extensive interviews with eyewitnesses. The study also determines the pattern of conflict as three-layered: West Pakistan versus East Pakistan, East Pakistanis (pro-Independence) versus East Pakistanis (pro-Union) and the fateful war between India and Pakistan.
As Prof Bose has noted, no prior study of the conflict has been done. What we have are narratives that strengthen one point of view by rubbishing contending viewpoints. The Bangladeshi meta-narrative, for instance, focuses on the rape issue and uses that not only to demonise the Pakistan army but also exploit it as a symbol of why it was important to break away from (West) Pakistan. Indeed, the sheer number of Bangladeshi women raped is placed in the millions, a fact to which the Hamoodur Rehman Commission Report also referred and declared as absurd. Even so, over the years the charge of rape has stuck to the Pakistan army and weighed it down in moral terms. Prof Bose, a Bengali herself and belonging to the family of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, has done a remarkable job of investigating the charge and paving the way for independent scholars to probe the issue further.

Prof Bose, who unveiled her study at a US State Department conference convened to mark the release of declassified US government documents from that period, also spoke about the violence generated by all sides. “The civil war of 1971 was fought between those who believed they were fighting for a united Pakistan and those who believed their chance for justice and progress lay in an independent Bangladesh. Both were legitimate political positions. All parties in this conflict embraced violence as a means to the end, all committed acts of brutality outside accepted norms of warfare, and all had their share of humanity. These attributes make the 1971 conflict particularly suitable for efforts towards reconciliation, rather than recrimination,” says Prof Bose.

It goes to Prof Bose’s credit that while studying the conflict she retained her professionalism and integrity, two essential traits normally absent in studies done of that period by all sides. Under the circumstances, if she wants to explore the issue further the Pakistan army should not hesitate to give her access to raw material in its archives so that she can expand her work. Indeed, here’s the Pakistan army’s chance to wash this stigma off it once and for all. We are reasonably sure that elements within Bangladesh — and even India — will criticise Bose’s study because it goes against the grain of Bangladeshi nationalism. But this will not take away from its impartialness and significance.

Here is the unedited version of her article:

The courageous Pakistan army stand on the eastern front —Sarmila Bose
There is much for Pakistan to come to terms with what happened in 1971. But the answers don’t lie in unthinking vilification of the fighting men who performed so well in the war against such heavy odds in defence of the national policy. Rather, in failing to honour them, the nation dishonours itself.

My introduction to international politics was 1971, as a schoolgirl in Calcutta. Many images from that year are still etched in my mind, but the culminating one was the photo on Ramna racecourse of two men sitting at a table — the smart, turbaned Sikh, ‘our’ war-hero, Jagjit Singh Aurora, and the large man in a beret, A A K Niazi, commander of the other side, signing the instrument of surrender.

Nearly a generation later, a chance interview for the BBC with Lt Gen. Aurora took me back to 1971. The interview was not about 1971, but about injustices suffered by Sikhs at the hands of the state General Aurora had served. I thought he was a bigger hero for what he had to say then. That view was reinforced as I read — with incredulity — the disparaging remarks by other Indian officers about him, and each other, in their books. If this is what happened to the winning commander, I wondered what had happened to the other man in the photo. The result was a revelation.
It turns out that General Niazi has been my ‘enemy’ since the Second World War. As Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and his Indian National Army fought on the Burma front in 1943-45 in their quest for India’s freedom, Niazi was fighting on the other side, for the British Indian Army, under the overall command of General (later Field Marshal) William Joseph Slim. Slim and his 14th Army halted the advance of the INA and the Japanese at the Imphal campaign and turned the course of the war.

In the process of inflicting military defeat upon my ancestor, Niazi’s performance was so exceptional that the British awarded him an on-the-spot Military Cross for action on the Assam-Burma front in June 1944. On another occasion they wanted to award a DSO, but he was too junior, so a Mention in Despatches was recorded. In the original record of his MC signed by his commanding officers all the way up to Slim, which I obtained from the British Ministry of Defence, the British commanders describe Niazi’s gallantry in detail: “He organized the attack with such skill that his leading platoon succeeded in achieving complete surprise over the enemy.” They speak of how he personally led his men, the ‘great skill and coolness’ under fire with which he changed tactics with changing circumstances, created diversionary attacks, extricated his wounded, defeated the enemy and withdrew his men by section, remaining personally at the rear in every case.

The British honoured Niazi for “personal leadership, bravery and complete disregard for his own personal safety.” On 15 December 1944 the Viceroy Lord Wavell flew to Imphal and in the presence of Lord Mountbatten knighted Slim and his corps commanders Stopford, Scoones and Christison. Only two ‘Indian’ officers were chosen to be decorated by the Viceroy at that ceremony — ‘Tiger’ Niazi was one of them.

In 1971 Niazi was a highly decorated Pakistani general, twice receiving the Hilal-e-Jurat. He was sent to East Pakistan in April 1971 — part of a sorry tradition in South Asia of political rulers attempting to find military solutions to political problems. By then Tikka Khan had already launched the crackdown of 25 March for which he has been known to Bengalis as the ‘butcher of Bengal’ ever since. The population of East Bengal was completely hostile and Pakistan condemned around the world.

Authoritative scholarly analyses of 1971 are rare. The best work is Richard Sisson and Leo Rose’s War and Secession. Robert Jackson, fellow of All Soul’s College, Oxford, wrote an account shortly after the events. Most of the principal participants did not write about it, a notable exception being Gen. Niazi’s recent memoirs (1998). Some Indian officers have written books of uneven quality — they make for an embarrassing read for what the Indians have to say about one another.

However, a consistent picture emerges from the more objective accounts of the war. Sisson and Rose describe how India started assisting Bengali rebels since April, but “the Mukti Bahini had not been able to prevent the Pakistani army from regaining control over all the major urban centers on the East Pakistani-Indian border and even establishing a tenuous authority in most of the rural areas.” From July to October there was direct involvement of Indian military personnel. “…mid-October to 20 November… Indian artillery was used much more extensively in support …and Indian military forces, including tanks and air power on a few occasions, were also used…Indian units were withdrawn to Indian territory once their objectives had been brought under the control of the Mukti Bahini — though at times this was only for short periods, as, to the irritation of the Indians, the Mukti Bahini forces rarely held their ground when the Pakistani army launched a counterattack.”

Clearly, the Pakistani army regained East Pakistan for their masters in Islamabad by April-May, creating an opportunity for a political settlement, and held off both Bengali guerrillas and their Indian supporters till November, buying more time — time and opportunity that Pakistan’s rulers and politicians failed to utilise.

Contrary to Indian reports, full-scale war between India and Pakistan started in East Bengal on 21 November, making it a four-week war rather than a ‘lightning campaign’. Sisson and Rose state bluntly: “After the night of 21 November…Indian forces did not withdraw. From 21 to 25 November several Indian army divisions…launched simultaneous military actions on all of the key border regions of East Pakistan, and from all directions, with both armored and air support.” Indian officers like Sukhwant Singh and Lachhman Singh write quite openly in their books about India invading East Pakistani territory in November, which they knew was ‘an act of war’.

None of the outside scholars expected the Eastern garrison to withstand a full Indian invasion. On the contrary, Pakistan’s longstanding strategy was “the defense of the east is in the west”. Jackson writes, “Pakistani forces had largely withdrawn from scattered border-protection duties into cleverly fortified defensive positions at the major centres inside the frontiers, where they held all the major ‘place names’ against Mukti Bahini attacks, and blocked the routes of entry from India…”

Sisson and Rose point out the incongruity of Islamabad tolerating India’s invasion of East Pakistani territory in November. On 30 November Niazi received a message from General Hamid stating, “The whole nation is proud of you and you have their full support.” The same day Islamabad decided to launch an attack in the West on 2 December, later postponed to 3 December, after a two-week wait, but did not inform the Eastern command about it. According to Jackson, the Western offensive was frustrated by 10 December.

Though futile, the Western offensive allowed India to openly invade the East, with overwhelming advantages. “ …despite all these advantages, the war did not go as smoothly and easily for the Indian army…”, but Sisson and Rose come to the balanced judgment that “The Pakistanis fought hard and well; the Indian army won an impressive victory.” Even Indian officers concede the personal bravery of Niazi and the spirited fight put up by the Pakistanis in the East. That the troops fought so well against such overwhelming odds is a credit both to them, and to their commanders, for an army does not fight well in the absence of good leadership.

However, as Jackson put it, “…India’s success was inevitable from the moment the general war broke out — unless diplomatic intervention could frustrate it.” As is well known, Pakistan failed to secure military or diplomatic intervention. Sisson and Rose also say, “The outcome of the conflict on the eastern front after 6 December was not in doubt, as the Indian military had all the advantages.” On 14 December Niazi received the following message from Yahya Khan: “You have fought a heroic battle against overwhelming odds. The nation is proud of you …You have now reached a stage where further resistance is no longer humanly possible nor will it serve any useful purpose… You should now take all necessary measures to stop the fighting and preserve the lives of armed forces personnel, all those from West Pakistan and all loyal elements…” Sisson and Rose naturally describe this message as “implying that the armed forces in East Pakistan should surrender”.

No matter how traumatic the outcome of 1971 for Pakistan, the Eastern command did not create the conflict, nor were they responsible for the failure of the political and diplomatic process. Sent to do the dirty work of the political manoeuvrers, the fighting men seem to have performed remarkably well against overwhelming odds. It is shocking therefore to discover that they were not received with honour by their nation on their return. Their commander, Niazi, appears to have been singled out, along with one aide, to be punished arbitrarily with dismissal and denial of pension, without being given the basic right to defend himself through a court-martial, which he asked for.

The commission set up allegedly to examine what had happened in 1971 was too flawed in its terms of reference and report to have any international credibility. However, even its recommendations of holding public trials and court-martials were ignored. There is much for Pakistan to come to terms with what happened in 1971. But the answers don’t lie in unthinking vilification of the fighting men who performed so well in the war against such heavy odds in defence of the national policy. Rather, in failing to honour them, the nation dishonours itself.

The key to Success - Ishq-e-Rasool s.a.w

"Ishq-e-Rasool (s.a.w.w) : The only pill that cures all diseases"

Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.w) is the most blessed prophet in the history of mankind. And his ummah is the luckiest of all the Ummahs. Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.w) was Allah's most beloved prophet and that can be known from the fact that he is the only prophet who is sent salutation from the Allah Almighty himself. No other prophet had the previlage of recieving salutations from Allah. This demonstrates the status of Holy Prophet Muhammed s.a.w.

Balaghal ula bikamaalihi [He(s.a.w.s) reached the highest place by his Perfection]
Kasha fad-dujaa bijamaalihi [He(s.a.w.s) removed darkness by his Beauty]
Hasunat jami'u khisaalihi [Beautiful are all his(s.a.w.s) Attainments]
Sallu 'aleyhi wa aalihi [Send blessings to Him(s.a.w.s) and his Family]
(Sheikh Saádi)

Quran Says: Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [ Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [ Allah to grant him] peace. [33:56]
Similarly Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.w) also loved Allah more than any other existence in the world, This mutual love is responsible for all the blessings on the ummah of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.w). But the question to be asked here is, How can we please Allah and get many more blessings?
  • The answer is very simple and is given in Quran by Allah Himself:
"Say (Oh Muhammad): ‘If you (truly) love Allah then follow me, so that Allah may love you and forgive your sins.’ And Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Compassionate." (3:31).

So, loving the Messenger of Allah means you indirectly love Allah, and in return you would be blessed by Allah on this world and the hereafter.
How can this love help us get blessing from Allah Almighty? In the above verse Allah Almighty has Himself showed us the criteria of getting blessed and loved by Him. Obey the Prophet s.a.w and get loved by Allah.
Love means Respect.
Love means Obeying

Both Love and Respect are the pre-requisite to develop a relation with Prophet Muhammed s.a.w and then to Allah Almighty. Without them, Love has no meaning and If both Respect and Love vanish from a Muslim society, what happens is just like our society these days as described by Qur'an:
"Let those beware who oppose the Messenger’s order! In case some fitnah(trial) should befall them or a painful torment be inflicted upon them." (24:63)

Unfortunately, Pakistan is also passing through the same stage. Nowadays, Muslims have become spiritless. So called pseudo Muslims! We all have become "amali munafiq" and we are facing the harsh consequences.

Ishq-e-Rasool (s.a.w.w) has great importance in a Momin's life. The whole ideology of a Mard-e-Momin revolves around Ishq-e-Rasool(s.a.w.w). Ishq-e-Rasool(S.a.w.w) make him touch the sky. Ishq-e-Rasool s.a.w is the factor which makes Allah Almighty ask him, bata teri raza kia hai?

The fall of Muslim empires was merely because of the lack of Ishq-e-Rasool (s.a.w.w). The only power that shivered the Taghooti forces was Ishq-e-Rasool (s.a.w.w). The difference between a Muslim and Momin is Ishq-e-Rasool(s.a.w.w). To eliminate this weapon from among the muslims, the elements of New World Order have been working extremely hard, and have been successful to much extent, but still there are many mard-e-momin who do not compromise on Ishq-e-Rasool. We cannot excel in any spiritual path without Ishq-e-Rasool(s.a.w.w).The complete religion of Islam is to Reach Aaqa(s.a.w.w), or else what ever you are doing, it can be attributed as "ABU-LAHABI" . Nothing more than wastage of time and energy. If AAQA (s.a.w.w)'s life is not the centre of gravity of your life, then there is no need to live this life. The life of Aaqa(s.a.w.w) is FURQAN, the Quran. If you love Aaqa(s.a.w.w), it means you love Quran, and if you love Quran, it means you love Allah.

The entire doctrine of IQBAL R.A is based on Qur'an and Ishq-e-Rasool(s.a.w.w). Baba IQBAL found the remedy of all the problems in Ishq-e-Rasool (s.a.w.w). Ishq-e-Rasool is the only pill that can cure all the spiritual diseases of a Muslim.
