Four western diplomats, including Britons and an American, were caught spying in the prohibited surroundings of the restricted Kahuta atomic plant. Interior ministry sources while quoting an intelligence report said that they were taking photographs of the area and carrying electronic gadgets including cameras and a laptop. These sources said that they were intercepted, questioned and later escorted back to Islamabad by the Pakistan security officials with the clear warning that they were crossing the red-line. Their cameras were confiscated; however, they were not formally arrested or thoroughly probed after they proved their diplomatic status. Interior Secretary Chaudhry Qamar Zaman, who is presently abroad, could not be approached. However, his Additional Secretary Asif Nawaz, who is currently looking after the ministry as its acting secretary, when approached was unsure if he saw such a report or not.

“Frankly I don’t recollect it. I might have disposed it in routine as fresh receipts are normally marked down and to the concerned agencies for necessary action,” he said.

The FO spokespersons despite repeated efforts was not available for her response on the matter. According to an informed interior ministry source, the ministry not only received the information from the Punjab home department but the ISI is also aware of it. The UK High Commission spokesperson when contacted responded, “This was a recreational hiking trip in the hills south of Murree. The group cooperated fully with the authorities.” The UK HC though did not explain any further but a diplomatic source explained that out of three of the UK High Commission officials identified in the report, only one is a regular member of the mission. According to the official report, four foreigners who were found in the forest area around Kahuta Atomic Plant on May 1 and intercepted in the afternoon included one USZ and three UK diplomats/officials. They include Ms Kilipna (or Kalitna) Merethy of the USZ Embassy while Mr Granyeer John Scort, Ms Exprece and Ms Angela Hyte were shown by the intelligence report as UK Embassy officials. Scort and Exprece were identified as having been associated with the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) wing of the embassy.

However, USZ embassy spokesperson Alberto Rodriguez when approached emailed to Pakistan's The News the following response:

“A female American diplomat was hiking in the Murree area on Sunday, May 1. That person was accompanied by three other persons of British, Canadian and New Zealand nationalities. While hiking, the group was stopped and questioned by the police. They were stopped, we understand, because the caretaker of a local cell or radio tower was asked by the police to report anyone unfamiliar in the area. The US diplomat was asked for identification and complied with the request of the police officer to show her camera to him. The police official looked at the digital photos on the camera and subsequently returned the camera without deleting any pictures. The group was informed that they were hiking in a restricted area and were subsequently escorted to the outskirts of Islamabad. The group saw no signs or markers indicating that the area was restricted. The American diplomat fully complied with the appropriate travel procedures at the embassy. The group comprised various nationalities. The group was in Murree, as the police can attest to, not in Kahuta or near an atomic power plant. I urge you to go back to your source and verify the information that was provided to you, as I believe there are errors in fact that would put into question whatever other information you have received. I am sure with your contacts, you can easily verify everything I have said with the local police in the area.”

However, the Special Branch Punjab report received by the Interior Ministry from the Punjab Home Department say:

“On 01-05-2011 at about 1240 hours, the field staff of Special Branch, Punjab, came to know about the presence of few foreigners in the forest area of Punj Pir, PS (police station) Kahuta taking photographs of the area. Kahuta Atomic Plant is visible from this area. They were also found carrying electronic gadgets including laptops. The matter was immediately brought in to the notice of Federal Intelligence Agency who also reached there and took the custody of the foreigners.” The report also contained the names of four foreigners as reflected earlier and identified as one American and three British.

Quoting the ISI report, the interior ministry source said that according to the ISI these four foreigners had gone there in a black Land Cruiser registration no Islamabad NS 857. They were intercepted initially by police around the restricted area of Kahuta atomic plant. When questioned, these foreigners were reported to have claimed that they were there for sightseeing. Having unsatisfied with their response, the police is said to have called the security officials of the Special Planning Division, who questioned them, verified their identities and escorted them back to Islamabad only after a clear warning that they were found in the no-go area. Two of their cameras with which they had taken the photographs of the sensitive area were confiscated.

Although Pakistan has now innumerable nuclear sites, Kahuta Atomic Plant for being the first atomic site developed is globally recognised as one of the major nuke sites of Pakistan. There has been repeated efforts made by the western, American and Indian intelligence operators to spy on the Kahuta Atomic Plant but as yet not only this particular nuclear site but each and every nuclear installation of the country has been remained inaccessible and fully secure. Only a couple of years back, some members of the US private company - DynCorp - reportedly containing CIA’s under cover operators were found involved in spying and several of them were disengaged from the places like Sihala Police College where they were apparently imparting training of police officials but were alleged to have been spying on Kahuta Nuclear facility. The Pakistani authorities noted suspected activities of certain members of DynCorp, which under a contractual obligation between Pakistan and the US, as was agreed during Musharraf’s regime, was engaged in law enforcement training, security matters and air aviation cooperation here.

Some of the intelligence agencies including the ISI and IB had credible reports about the involvement of certain members of DynCorp in spying business. An intelligence agency had reported to the government in 2009 that three Americans alongwith a Pakistani had tried to trespass into restricted area of Kahuta Power Plant but the official security agency deployed at the check post got alerted and intercepted them when they crossed the check post and entered restricted area. The Pakistani accompanying these Americans was a retired assistant director of the FIA, who while introducing himself as FIA officer had managed to free the Americans and returned. Through this trespassing, according to the official report, the Americans had tried to check the security arrangement for Kahuta Research Laboratories. That very incident had played a vital role in moving out DynCorp men from Sihala Police college facility where they were allowed to train the police officials but were found in spying the country’s nuclear facility.

Army will break some teeth if any raid takes place inside Pakistan in the future

Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir said that any country that again seeks to raid its territory would face consequences from Pakistan’s military. Speaking at a media briefing in Islamabad on Thursday Bashir said the American allegations about intelligence agencies' links with Al-Qaeda are baseless. He said Pakistan's sovereignty is supreme to anything, the military can defend the country. "Our radars were jammed during the raid at Osama's hideout. It was a secret operation and the military was not informed about it", he said.

Earlier yesterday, General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani headed an emergency meeting in the GHQ and the participants discussed the whole Osama circus in detail. General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, during his address to the meeting, said that the international community must not doubt Pakistan's role in War Against "Terrorism". On the other hand, Chief of Army Staff called for an emergency meeting of Corps Commanders today whose agenda was reported as to discuss the post OBL circus paradigm shift in the region and very important decisions are expected to take place in the meeting. According to reports, all Corps Commanders and Formation Commanders are among the participants of the emergency meeting. It is expected that the Military leadership of Pakistan is going to take strict actions against the untold covert American Circus in the country's borders.

Iran: USZ has no business left in the region after OBL circus

Iran's Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi says Osama bin Laden's so-called death leaves no excuse for the USZ to remain in the region and that it should promptly withdraw its forces in the region.

“By announcing the news of bin Laden's death, the USZ tried to claim that they have been successful, but with a closer look at news reports and other relevant issues, we notice that this has been a major failure for the Americans”, Brigadier General Vahidi said on Wednesday. Vahidi added that the USZ invaded Afghanistan under the pretext of killing bin Laden, using the same excuse to stay and wage war in Iraq, and even engaging Pakistan in the war effort, IRNA reported.

According to reported statistics, noted Vahidi, these USZ-led wars took over a million lives and inflicted more than a trillion dollars in military expenditures on the Americans, Vahidi said. The Iranian defense minister also insisted that the USZ imposed 10 years of wars on these countries, thus impeding their progress. Meanwhile, a USZ crackpot official announced that bin Laden's body thrown at sea following “an Islamic burial procession”, claiming that the hasty move was in accordance with an Islamic law that requires burial within 24 hours of death. This is while burial at sea is not an Islamic practice and Islam does not have a decree, determining a timeframe for burial. The same American crackpot official also claimed that finding a country willing to accept bin Laden was difficult and therefore the USZ decided to bury him at sea. The crackpot official did not indicate how many countries were contacted on the issue and also, if really Bin Laden was inside the green casket or not since according to confirmed reports from White House itself, Bin Laden died as early as in 2001.

David Patraeus failed in Afghanistan, removed by Pentagon

It seems, the four-star general of the Afghanistan war, David Petraeus who is regarded as a hero of the American army and a tower of hopes of that country, crumbled, faced fiasco and being forced to leave Afghanistan. David Petraeus assumed the slot of the top general in Afghanistan, following Mc Crystal mocking American high-ranking officials in an interview given to the Rolingstone journal. Obama put pressure on Mc Crystal to step down and replaced him with David Petraeus.

Though the sources close to David Petraeus claim that he leaves his post at his own will but experts and the ground realities indicate that he leaves the country because of the humiliation and seatbacks he is facing in his mission; and due to the fact that America is entangled in the war of Afghanistan ever more; the American troops casualties have comparably spiraled up many times; the country is grappling with financial melt-down and the American image as a murderer and criminal has been exposed to the world and to the Afghan people because of the mass murder of civilians committed by the American troops. It should be said that the killing of common people was Petraeus strategy in the first place.

The Obama Administration was predicting that it will keep the war machine running which had almost broken down, if they send general Petraeus to Afghanistan — the army man who had been made larger-than-life figure by hypes of the American information machine network. They thought that they would defeat the Mujahideen; would expand the writ of the Kabul Puppet Administration and would pave the way for realization of American anti-Islamic and ani-Afghan ambitions. But during the past year, though the general resorted to perpetrating brutalities, using both muscles and ploys but obtained nothing. Contrarily, Mujahideen's writ extended to areas where they had had no influence during the past nine years. They were able to launch attacks against those sensitive centers, both foreign and internal, that they never imaged of before that. Among the hundreds of such examples, we can mention a few like, the attacks in the Ministry of Defense, and the Air Corp of the Kabul Puppet Regime and the jailbreak in Kandahar.

According to a survey published by Western media outlets at the end of the last year, the Mujahideen had launched 18,000 attacks during 2010 while the year was not ended completely. If we divide that number by 12 months, we will have 50 attacks every day at average. If we presume that only one foreign soldier has been killed in 3 attacks, then the casualties counts would reach 6,000 soldiers dead. However, in general, there are usually more foreign soldiers casualties during any single attack. These are some of the prominent indicators of the frustrated and failed mission of David Petraeus. The main focus of Petraeus in Afghanistan has been to flare up tribal, lingual, geographical and religious differences and frictions so that Afghanistan will divide by ethnicity and the thread of its national unity will unfurl. But the Almighty Allah foiled this diabolic scheme of Petreaus. Mujahideen took the sparks of jihad to every corner of Afghanistan during the term of Petreaus posting. The strongholds of Jihad became active in the north like they are in other parts of the country. This proved that Afghanistan is a single entity, enjoying unbreakable coordination and bondage.

The other dangerous schemes of Petraeus were the formation of Arbakis and local militias. Thus he wanted to create rifts between the Mujahideen and the common people. But the Afghan people were aware of the consequences of this wicked plan. They are still remembering the bitter memories of the past communist regime. So they decisively foiled this devilish conspiracy and a strong reaction of the Afghan masses came to the open. The American sources may ascribe Petraeus transfer to his poor health, or that he is suffering from cancer or he is going to be appointed as chairman of the European Union or that he is a pick for chairmanship of CIA, the diabolic network. Though, he may be appointed to one of these slots, but the real cause for his transfer is that, this key figure of Pentagon, a general emblazoned with so many medals and stars is that he clearly failed to deliver the “good”. He has faced humiliation, bearing multi-facet stigmas on his face. Therefore, Pentagon and the White House had to remove him as he was adding to the already accumulated humiliation. The powers-that-be in American will replace him by another snowman to keep the attention of the public of the West engaged for some time.

New CIA chief Patraeus to fight 3rd war in Pakistan - ISI angry

NEW YORK: General David H. Petraeus has served as commander in two wars launched by the United States of Zionism after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. If confirmed as the next director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Petraeus would effectively take command of a third in Pakistan, Washington Post published in its report. Petraeus’s nomination comes at a time when the CIA functions, more than ever in its history, as an extension of the nation’s lethal military force. CIA teams operate alongside USZ special operations forces in conflict zones from Afghanistan to Yemen. The agency has also built up a substantial paramilitary capability of its own. But perhaps most significantly, the agency is in the midst of what amounts to a sustained bombing campaign over Pakistan using unmanned Predator and Reaper drones.

Petraeus is seen as a staunch supporter of the drone campaign, even though it has so far only succeeded in killing women and children in the name of "militants of Al-Qaeda". During an interview late last year in Islamabad, a high-ranking Pakistani intelligence official repeatedly referred to the USZ commander as “Mr. Petraeus”, refusing to acknowledge his military rank. The intelligence official further said that there are rumors that Patraeus may even be made the next president of the USZ since he's not a general rather he's a politician. Washington post further writes that ISI of Pakistan is not happy with Patraeus' appointment as the CIA chief at all.

Unfair wedding threatens Royals' future in England

Analysts are questioning the 'fairness' of imposing the astronomically huge costs of the Royal Wedding on common British taxpayers amid growing public weariness of the wide coverage given to the 'unpleasant' event. While there are fictitious claims promoted by the Zionist chain of media outlets that the royal wedding will at the end of the day benefit the British public both economically by triggering retailers' sales as well as attracting interested tourists and socially by spreading happiness London-based writer and journalist Peter Carty believes the opposite is true. Carty said in an interview with Iran's Press TV that as the widely hyped event is not going to “bring in more income in the country as a whole” one comes to believe “it's quite clearly unfair” on the populous.

“I don't think it is going to bring in more income in the country as a whole. Our overall income will probably go down by six billion pounds and the amount of extra revenue we're going to get back from tourism, sales of memorabilia etc, would be about one billion pounds best estimate - something like 1.5 billion USZ dollars, so overall the country is going to lose out very heavily. The question of whether that's fair on the populous as a whole - It's quite clearly unfair”, he said.

Carty also said, to add insult to injury the media are giving a pointlessly wide coverage to the event despite the solely symbolic and ceremonial position of the royal family in the British politics and the low opinion of the people about the monarchy. “It's [the royal wedding] extremely unpopular with a substantial proportion of the population. A poll has been conducted by a republican group that indicates that approximately 80 percent of British people really aren't very interested in the wedding at all. So to ask everyone to finance it is very unfair when you look into the issue closely”, he said. Carty then stressed focus on the royal wedding is not only politically inconsequential for the moment it is deemed also to hurt people into hatred of the royal family eventually leading to a public push for the removal of royals.

“The way the [state-funded] BBC is pumping out massive coverage of the run up to the wedding is highly likely to alienate people from the monarchy that normally wouldn't be too concerned about this institution that's mostly in the background and you don't have to pay attention to it if you don't want to. To really rub people's noses in it the way the media is doing at the moment I think will backfire and might produce more impetus toward the eventual disbandment of this institution”, he said.

Carty stressed “huge numbers of British people are really getting 'annoyed' at the “saturation” of media coverage of the nuptials that will 'ironically' lead to change. I'm not saying that's going to happen overnight or even very soon, but inevitably over time as we become a more educated and developed society, support for the monarchy is likely to fade away. Ironically I think the royal wedding might actually be speeding that process up.”

Official figures show the price tag for the wedding ceremony of Prince William and Kate Middleton including the security costs will hit tens of millions of pounds which will be imposed on the British taxpayers despite the multi-billion pound wealth of the royal family. Many among the public and campaign groups have already expressed their displeasure with the royal wedding proceedings as the activists from the anti-monarchy group Republic has organized rallies on Friday April 29 to hit the wedding.

U.K backing Balochi-Sindhi separatist movements - Zionist oil vultures eying Balochistan

There are reliable reports that British intelligence agencies are turning a blind eye or rather give “tacit support” to Baloch and Sindh elements directly connected with terrorists inside Pakistan. These reports indicate that the anti-Pakistan Baloch elements are in direct contacts with so called BLA and Lashkar-e-Balochistan militant groups. These elements are freely contacting American, Indian and British diplomats in London and have been regularly organizing anti-Pakistan campaign since 2010. The newly formed Lashkar-e-Balochistan has carried out recent attacks at Karachi Airport and in Malir (Army base). The Lashkar-e-Balochistan killed people in Naval colony in Karachi last month. Lashkar-e-Balochistan is an off-shoot of so called Balochistan Liberation Army which is known for its contacts with RAW and foreign military personnel inside Afghanistan. It was Lashkar-e-Balochistan which issued a warning to oil, gas companies to quit Balochistan and attacked people of Gwadar Port killing more than a dozen workers.

The Baloch militants are running training camps near Spin Boldak (Inside Afghanistan). They are reported to be sending terrorists with sophisticated weapons and mines to Pakistan. Their main targets are Pakistan Army and communication networks. Pakistanis have noted increased activities of BLA and LeB activities in London including meetings with British officials as well as American and Indian diplomats. Only a few days back, on March 28th, 2011 a group of anti-Pakistan Baloch and Sindhi elements gathered in front of USZ embassy in London and demanded foreign intervention in Balochistan. The demonstration was apparently organized by the so called Baloch Human Rights Council (UK), the world Sindhi Congress and Balochistan Liberation Organization in collaboration with Baloch Raaje Zroumbesh, Balochistan Peoples Party and Balochistan United Front. Irrefutable evidence clearly tells that Baloch militants are using front groups to mould public opinion, mobilize contacts with western governments and raise funds for terrorist actions against Pakistan Army. At the demonstration, the speakers included Dr. Abdul Doshoki, Dr. Lakhu Luhana, Waja Rahim Bandvoi, Waja Abdullah Seyahoi, Mansoor Baloch, Hassan Hamdam and Samad Baloch. Samad Baloch is General Secretary of Baloch Human Rights Council (UK).

Secret U.K. government papers reveal direct relation between Oil firms and Iraq invasion

Plans to exploit Iraq's oil reserves were discussed by government ministers and the world's largest oil companies the year before Britain took a leading role in invading Iraq, government documents show. The papers, revealed here for the first time, raise new questions over Britain's involvement in the war, which had divided Tony Blair's cabinet and was voted through only after his claims that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. The minutes of a series of meetings between ministers and senior oil executives are at odds with the public denials of self-interest from oil companies and Western governments at the time.

The documents were not offered as evidence in the ongoing Chilcot Inquiry into the UK's involvement in the Iraq war. In March 2003, just before Britain went to war, Shell denounced reports that it had held talks with Downing Street about Iraqi oil as "highly inaccurate". BP denied that it had any "strategic interest" in Iraq, while Tony Blair described "the oil conspiracy theory" as "the most absurd". But documents from October and November the previous year paint a very different picture. Five months before the March 2003 invasion, Baroness Symons, then the Trade Minister, told BP that the Government believed British energy firms should be given a share of Iraq's enormous oil and gas reserves as a reward for Tony Blair's military commitment to USZ plans for regime change. The papers show that Lady Symons agreed to lobby the Bush administration on BP's behalf because the oil giant feared it was being "locked out" of deals that Washington was quietly striking with USZ, French and Russian governments and their energy firms.

Minutes of a meeting with BP, Shell and BG (formerly British Gas) on 31 October 2002 read:

"Baroness Symons agreed that it would be difficult to justify British companies losing out in Iraq in that way if the UK had itself been a conspicuous supporter of the USZ government throughout the crisis."

The minister then promised to "report back to the companies before Christmas" on her lobbying efforts. The Foreign Office invited BP in on 6 November 2002 to talk about opportunities in Iraq "post regime change". Its minutes state:

"Iraq is the big oil prospect. BP is desperate to get in there and anxious that political deals should not deny them the opportunity."

After another meeting, this one in October 2002, the Foreign Office's Middle East director at the time, Edward Chaplin, noted:

"Shell and BP could not afford not to have a stake in [Iraq] for the sake of their long-term future... We were determined to get a fair slice of the action for UK companies in a post-Saddam Iraq."

Whereas BP was insisting in public that it had "no strategic interest" in Iraq, in private it told the Foreign Office that Iraq was "more important than anything we've seen for a long time". BP was concerned that if Washington allowed TotalFinaElf's existing contact with Saddam Hussein to stand after the invasion it would make the French conglomerate the world's leading oil company. BP told the Government it was willing to take "big risks" to get a share of the Iraqi reserves, the second largest in the world. Over 1,000 documents were obtained under Freedom of Information over five years by the oil campaigner Greg Muttitt. They reveal that at least five meetings were held between civil servants, ministers and BP and Shell in late 2002.

The 20-year contracts signed in the wake of invasion were the largest in the history of the oil industry. They covered half of Iraq's reserves – 60 billion barrels of oil, bought up by companies such as BP (British Petroleum) and CNPC (China National Petroleum Company), whose joint consortium alone stands to make £403m ($658m) profit per year from the Rumaila field in southern Iraq. Last week, Iraq raised its oil output to the highest level for almost decade, 2.7 million barrels a day – seen as especially important at the moment given the regional volatility and loss of Libyan output. Many opponents of the war suspected that one of Washington's main ambitions in invading Iraq was to secure a cheap and plentiful source of oil. Mr Muttitt, whose book Fuel on the Fire is published next week, said:

"Before the war, the Government went to great lengths to insist it had no interest in Iraq's oil. These documents provide the evidence that give the lie to those claims. We see that oil was in fact one of the Government's most important strategic considerations, and it secretly colluded with oil companies to give them access to that huge prize."

Lady Symons, 59, later took up an advisory post with a UK merchant bank that cashed in on post-war Iraq reconstruction contracts. Last month she severed links as an unpaid adviser to Libya's National Economic Development Board after Colonel Gaddafi started firing on protesters. Last night, BP and Shell declined to comment.

"Iraq is the big oil prospect. BP are desperate to get in there and anxious that political deals should not deny them the opportunity to compete. The long-term potential is enormous..."

* Tony Blair, 6 February 2003:

"Let me just deal with the oil thing because... the oil conspiracy theory is honestly one of the most absurd when you analyse it. The fact is that, if the oil that Iraq has were our concern, I mean we could probably cut a deal with Saddam tomorrow in relation to the oil. It's not the oil that is the issue, it is the weapons..."

* BP, 12 March 2003:

"We have no strategic interest in Iraq. If whoever comes to power wants Western involvement post the war, if there is a war, all we have ever said is that it should be on a level playing field. We are certainly not pushing for involvement."

* Lord Browne, the then-BP chief executive, 12 March 2003:

"It is not in my or BP's opinion, a war about oil. Iraq is an important producer, but it must decide what to do with its patrimony and oil."

* Shell, 12 March 2003, said reports that it had discussed oil opportunities with Downing Street were 'highly inaccurate', adding:

"We have neither sought nor attended meetings with officials in the UK Government on the subject of Iraq. The subject has only come up during conversations during normal meetings we attend from time to time with officials... We have never asked for 'contracts'."

Afghan Mujahideen blast fake claims of Abdul Khaliq Malekzai

A person who calls himself Abdul Khaliq Malekzai has had audio interview with some media outlets, claiming that he was an envoy of Taliban and wanted to reach reconciliation with the so-called Kabul Administration. He said that he was already engaged in talks (with the stooge Administration). He also claimed that there are 12,000 Taliban who agree with his program and talks are continuing with 6,000 more Taliban to persuade them to join the reconciliation process with the State. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, like before, strongly refutes these baseless and fatuous claims and considers them as failed endeavors on the part of the enemy in a series of its psychological warfare. No member of the Islamic Emirate, whether a high-ranking or low-ranking Mujahid, has ever contacted any side for talks directly or indirectly.

It is no more than mere propaganda and lies that some faceless persons appear in media time and again and claim, they are envoys of the Islamic Emirate appointed for ( participation) in the talks. In fact, they are hirelings of the enemy and their stooges. As the enemy is facing defeats in every part of the country and has lost its warfare capability in face of the Mujahideen, so it is trying to confuse the public opinion and distract their attention—an effort by invaders to cover up their defeat and weakness. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has a clear stance as regards the negotiation. The Islamic Emirate is not ready to have talks in condition of presence of the invaders. This should be made clear that talks in condition of the occupation gives legitimacy to the present Puppet Administration and to the occupation itself. This is a disloyalty to and betrayal with the cause and aspirations of the Mujahid people of Afghanistan.

Cracks appear in NATO over Libya operation - Russia calls Air raids “medeival call to crusade”

Libyan forces regroup after Allied missile strikes

An allied missile strike has destroyed a building in Libya’s capital, Tripoli, which was one of Col Muammar Gaddafi’s command centers. However, cracks appeared in the NATO member states over military campaign in Libya. Journalists were shown the wrecked building but it was not clear if there were any casualties. While lying as it usually does, the United States of Zionism denied targeting Gaddafi. USZ Defence Secretary Robert Gates said it would be “unwise,” and French defence ministry spokesman Laurent Teisseire also said, “The answer is no”, when asked whether coalition forces would fire on the Libyan leader if they located him. NATO ambassadors met in Brussels on Monday to try to resolve differences on possible alliance involvement in the campaign against Libyan leader. Speaking in Makkah on Monday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey wanted several conditions met for a NATO role.

“Now the issue is NATO going into operation. If NATO is going into operation we have some conditions. NATO should go in with the recognition and acknowledgement that Libya belongs to the Libyans, not for the distribution of its underground resources and wealth. Our biggest desire is for this operation to be finished as soon as possible,” said Erdogan.

Diplomats say France has argued against NATO involvement on the grounds the alliance’s reputation had been damaged in the Arab world by the war in Afghanistan and because it was seen as dominated by the United States of Zionism. However, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said Monday that NATO is ready to back up the international coalition intervening in Libya within “a few days.” Several NATO nations, led by France, Britain and the United States of Zionism, have taken part in air attacks on Libya, but the role of NATO as an organisation has been limited to expanded air surveillance. The European Union agreed new economic sanctions against Gaddafi’s regime, targeting both individuals and economic entities, diplomatic sources said. The major new sanctions apply to 11 Gaddafi associates and nine economic entities and are expected to be enforced some time this week. The entities were not named but sources said they were “investment companies, foundations, banks and state” groups. Oil and gas companies were not listed. It was the third wave of restrictive EU measures slapped against Gaddafi amid increasing pressure on the Libyan leader to step down. Europe’s powers headed for a clash over the allied campaign in Libya as foreign ministers from the 27-nation EU went into talks Monday divided over the initial intervention and a possible NATO role. “It shouldn’t be a war on Libya,” said Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, whose country is one of little more than a third of European Union nations engaged in the three-day old campaign. Italy, a former colonial power in Libya which enjoyed close political and economic ties with Gaddafi and faces a looming exodus of refugees from the vast desert nation, nonetheless joined the alliance after dragging its feet.

NATO on the verge of falling apart

“We want to verify very carefully all the actions undertaken in order to verify consistency with the (UN) resolution objectives”, Frattini told reporters as he joined his counterparts for talks. “Deep longterm support for countries going through change” remained at the centre of EU concern, said the bloc’s foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton. Apart from Britain and France, involved in the military campaign so far are Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Norway and Spain. Bulgaria labelled military intervention in Libya an “adventure” driven by petroleum interests. “We are not participating for the simple reason that (the campaign) does not have formulated objectives and ways to achieve them. I would not let our pilots into an adventure like this”, said Prime Minister Boyko Borisov. Sweden and Luxembourg are willing to commit - but under a NATO umbrella, another sticking-point among the Europeans as France holds out against a majority among its partners who would prefer to see the 28-member alliance involved. Germany, at odds with the other two “big” EU powers Britain and France after refusing to vote in favour of Resolution 1973, joined the Brussels meeting criticising alliance action in Libya and saying it justified Berlin’s decision to stay out in the cold. “We always said we wouldn’t send soldiers,” said Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle. “This does not mean we are neutral, this does not mean that we have any sympathy with the dictator Gaddafi.” But “we calculated the risks”, he added. “And when we see that three days after this intervention began, the Arab League has already criticised this intervention, I think we see we had good reasons.”

Finland’s outspoken Alexander Stubb brushed aside the controversy, saying “let’s not make mountains out of molehills.” The UN resolution offered “a very broad mandate to protect civilians”, he said. “We’re only 48 hours into the intervention. So far so good!” The UN Security Council will probably hold a close door meeting on Libya later on Monday, a diplomat said. The meeting was called to consider a Libyan demand for an emergency session of the Security Council, the diplomat said. Gaddafi’s army announced a new ceasefire late Sunday. A Libyan official said 64 people had been killed in strikes at the weekend. On Sunday night anti-aircraft fire rose over Tripoli and several explosions were heard. The city echoed with gunfire and the sky lit up with the red glow of tracer rounds. Several loud explosions rocked the city, including one at Col Gaddafi’s own residential compound. The compound had filled up with enthusiastic supporters of Col Gaddafi only the previous day - civilians who said they were ready to die with him if necessary. It is not known whether any of them were still in the compound when the missiles struck. Some journalists were taken to the site during the night. A Libyan government spokesman said it was proof the allies were targeting non-military locations. The removal of Col Gaddafi is not a stated aim of the UN Security Council resolution. But this strike is a reminder that he is not safe from the allied air strikes. Gaddafi’s troops retreated 100 km from Benghazi after fierce strafing by coalition aircraft destroyed much of their armour, but beat off a rebel advance on their new positions in the town of Ajdabiya. USZ officials said its forces would be taking more of a back seat after the initial effort to destroy Libya’s defences, with other countries, including Arab states, enforcing the no-fly zone.

Meanwhile, Russia and India hit out Monday at the Western-led air campaign in Libya, leading a chorus of condemnation. In one of his most virulent diatribes against the West in years, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin slammed the UN resolution allowing military action against Gaddafi‘s forces as a “medieval call to crusade”. India urged an immediate halt to the strikes spearheaded by French fighter jets Saturday, while Germany said it had “good reasons” for abstaining from Thursday’s UN Security Council vote on the resolution allowing the action. “The resolution by the Security Council, of course, is defective and flawed”, Putin was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies. “To me, it resembles some sort of medieval call to crusade when someone would appeal to someone to go to a certain place and free someone else”, he charged.

UK's humanitarian charade busted

Britain’s hypocrisy has come into the limelight as fresh questions were raised Saturday night about Labour’s close links with the Libyan regime and it emerged that Saif Gaddafi was given special assistance by British intelligence agency MI6 while he was a student in London. The move followed a request by Libya, which wanted protection for Colonel Gaddafi’s playboy second son to support his role as an unofficial negotiator with the British Government. The secret intelligence service agreed to find a police officer who would act as Saif Gaddafi’s ‘point man’ should his security be threatened. He was also given a secret telephone number to call. The role of MI6 will add to speculation that Tony Blair’s Government was prepared to do all that it could to appease the Gaddafi regime.

Saif Gaddafi arrived in the UK in the summer of 2002 when he began a one-year Masters course, and then a four-year PhD, at the London School of Economics, which boasts close links to senior figures in the then Labour administration. Former British Foreign Office Minister Baroness Symons is on the advisory board of London School of Economics Ideas – the arm of the university which teaches international diplomacy – along with Jonathan Powell, who was Tony Blair’s chief-of-staff.
